In anticipation of the upcoming summer festival season Toby Barelli and the full four-piece line-up embark upon a short season of guerilla style open air sessions. Rolling a hand-cart filled with Double Bass, Cajon, Conga and Resonator Guitar through the streets of Hastings to one of a few specially selected sites throughout the town. No promotion, no advertising, just turn up and play. Steadily a crowd gathers, a little bemused at first but in this magically strange town nothing surprises for long. Butlers Gap known locally as 'The Chess Square', Bottle Alley and Emmets Carousel all play host to the heavyweight acoustic sounds of KING SIZE SLIM each session had a unique flavour appropriate for its setting.
Spring has sprung, summer is on its way and plans are afoot at KSS HQ.
Heres the press release:
Whilst in the green room awaiting their respective shows on the same bill at the all-acoustic event ‘Slim Monday’, part of the Hastings Fat Tuesday celebrations, Wah-Wah 45s artist Bev Lee Harling and British Blues Award winner Toby Barelli alternatively known as King Size Slim got talking. They got talking about the artistic freedom of not sitting static behind a microphone. They talked about the breaking down of the barrier between an audience and a performing artist and how much more intimate and inclusive that can be. They talked about a similar desire to present their music in a much more genuine fashion. Plans are now underway for a unique 'in-the-round' all acoustic double bill tour.
Meanwhile rehearsals and guerilla style gigs in anticipation of the full four-piece bands festival engagements this coming summer are in full swing. Double Bass, Resonator Guitar , Cajon and Quinto are the ingredients, Heavyweight Acoustic Groove is the flavour.
All at KING SIZE SLIM were enormously happy to hear about the release of Skip McDonalds' latest album London Blues on Echo Beach records. Toby Barellis' resonator slide guitar playing is featured on 7 of the 11 tracks. Following collaborative sessions at On-U sound studio producer Adrian Sherwood has seen the project through to release.
Its Mardi Gras, or more precisely Hastings Fat Tuesday. The annual event now in its 9th year draws thousands of people for many events over 5 days. This year KING SIZE SLIM will be on the Saturday acoustic tour (10/02/18) visiting 5 Old Town venues in 5 hours performing a short acoustic set in each. Then he'll host 'Slim Monday' (12/02/18) , a 'night before the storm' early-show event at The Palace.
Coming up....... Broadstairs Blues Bash Sunday 18th February.
Studio sessions for the forthcoming new KING SIZE SLIM album
2017 has seen KING SIZE SLIM perform in France, Belgium, Romania, Hungary and Bahrain and across the UK, many miles travelled, many songs sung on many stages. Many thanks to This is Now agency, DHP family and all of the promotors reps and stage managers and sound engineers who've ably assisted along the way.
The new digipak C.D release 'Live at The Palace' continues to receive great reviews and a surprising amount of radio airplay, radio stations are not generally keen on airing live recordings.
